FIBA announced on November 15 2016 have suspended the Brazilian Basketball Federation (CBB), following a meeting of its Executive Committee.

Failure to respect its commitments by the Brazilian Federation

La Fiba recalls that it had created a "Taskforce for the reorganization of the CBB and for the development of basketball in Brazil"Shortly before the Rio Olympics.

Nevertheless, the Executive Committee could not "to note that the restructuring has not been completed and that the CBB does not currently respect all its commitments as a national federation member of FIBA, as provided for by the General Statutes".

Failures of the Brazilian authority

The press release of the International Federation specifies the shortcomings of the Brazilian authority:

  • "Non-participation in international competitions"(especially for youth or 3x3 competitions);
  • Nationwide, cancellation of major youth championships;
  • Inability to fully manage basketball in the country. La Fiba sets an example for third-party intervention "in the selection and financing of the activities of the national teams";
  • Late payments owed to FIBA over a long period, despite the many grace periods granted by FIBA. The general financial situation of the CBB does not allow it to finance its own operations or to enjoy a good reputation in its country.
  • Lack of reform or restructuring plan ahead of the next elections.

The Fiba Executive Committee thus deplores "the basketball situation in Brazil, a few months after the Olympic Games were held". He urges the CBB to work closely with FIBA and the taskforce,"in order to overcome the serious difficulties encountered at the institutional, sporting and financial levels".

Fiba's Central Office will reassess the situation at its meeting on January 28, 2017.
